  6. Welcome to Economics 101.  You will find here some of the 
  7. tools and graphics suitable for a first (or early) course in general 
  8. economics.  More specifically, this package contains handouts, 
  9. quizzes, tests, exams, explanatory charts, work sheets, and a grade 
  10. sheet originally targeted for 19-20 year olds (many foreign) 
  11. attending a finishing school.

  14. To make this available to the widest possible audience, we  
  15. have packaged the materials to use with the most “generic” 
  16. programs.  That is, even though many of the handouts were 
  17. developed with MacDraft, we have converted them to MacDraw 
  18. PICT format so that MacDraw, MacDraft, PageMaker etc. can 
  19. reference them easily.  You may expect to use the following 
  20. programs with the materials:

  32. You may notice that some of the exams appear in three 
  33. versions.  This of course is to deal with those choosing to cheat.  
  34. Since capital punishment is only slightly more effective than 
  35. corporal punishment which is only slightly more effective than no 
  36. punishment at all for those determined to cheat, the exams are 
  37. designed to let the cheaters punish themselves.  This has resulted 
  38. in some sadly humourous situations after the exams.  A key is 
  39. provided for parts of the final exam.

  68. Circular Flow of Wealth.  This is a graphic page providing some insight 
  69. into the flow of money for goods and services.  Because this document 
  70. contains bitmap images, it is s-l-o-w to print on a laserwriter (about a 
  71. half hour for the first copy, only half a minute after that), so don't 
  72. panic.  The often “96% of original” rule for bitmap graphics on a 
  73. laserwriter doesn't appear to affect this graphic.

  76. Competition.  Another graphic illustrating competition in America.  There 
  77. is also a corresponding quiz.  Consider printing at 96% on a 
  78. laserwriter.  (But still looks good at 100%)

  81. Decision Table.  A work sheet for demonstrating the use of economic 
  82. decision tables.

  85. Economic Charts.  Handout of pie charts, bar graphs, and so on.

  88. Economic Systems.  A view of communism vs socialism vs capitalism.  We 
  89. tried to be non-judgmental and especially non-political in the course 
  90. and permit the students to reach their own conclusions.  A partially- 
  91. completed summary of the characteristics of economic systems 
  92. appears at the bottom of the page for the students to add their own 
  93. comments.

  96. Final Essay.  Essay questions for the final exam.  Readily completed by 
  97. those who didn't nap too often.

  100. Final Extra.  More essay questions for extra credit.  Non-trivial.

  103. Final Key.  Since three versions of the exams were floating about, we have 
  104. supplied the key to make life a little easier.

  107. Final 2.1-3.3.  These are multiple choice questions, three different 
  108. versions of two pages each.  The key is in Final Key.  Don't copy in my 
  109. class!  Oh, yes, any given version may be identified by the date in the 
  110. corner.

  113. Grades 86.  A grading sheet in Excel.  Not terribly sophisticated since we 
  114. are not Excelaholics, or rather I should say we are Excel naïfs.  (Great 
  115. package I think.)  The live data was truncated to protect the not-so-
  116. innocent.

  119. Match 1-3.  Midterm tests.  Again three versions to protect the smartfrom 
  120. the unethical.  Each version is identifiable by the date in the upper 
  121. corner.

  124. Org Chart.  Organizational chart test page kept fairly simple.  You may wish 
  125. to simplify it even further.  Bit map but decent at 100% on laserwriter.

  128. Quiz I, II, III.  First three quizzes for the course.  We gave them on lectures 
  129. 2, 3, and 5 of the course which brought forth howls of complaints.  By 
  130. lecture 4, the students were in fine shape.  We offset the “surprise” of 
  131. the first quiz by an offer to the students:  If as a class they followed 
  132. certain rules of conduct and excellence, we would drop their lowest 
  133. grade.  They did and we did.

  136. Supply and Demand.  Simple graphs depicting Supply, Demand, and 
  137. Single Market.
